McCain said that he was glad to be in Dayton on his 72nd birthday. He said he was glad to be in the southeastern Ohio city to announce his historic running mate, Sarah Palin. He said he was running for president to fight for the people of the midwest as he announced his choice for co-pilot. McCain said "I found someone with an outstanding reputation for standing up to special interests and entrenched bureaucracies; someone who has fought against corruption and the failed policies of the past; someone who’s stopped government from wasting taxpayers’ money". He continued by saying that governor Palin "was a union member and is married to a union member and understands the problems, the hopes and the values of working people, knows what it’s like to worry about mortgage payments and health care and the cost of gasoline and groceries; a standout high school point guard; a concerned citizen who became a member of the PTA, then a city council member, and then a mayor, and now a governor". McCain said he picked Palin "to help me fight the same old Washington politics of me first and country second." Palin began her applause-filled speech by saying "Thank you so much. And I thank you, Senator McCain and Mrs. McCain, for the confidence that you have placed in me. Senator, I am honored to be chosen as your running mate.". The first -term Alaskan governor, who finished second on a beauty pageant several years ago, went to say I never really set out to be involved in public affairs, much less to run for this office. My mom and dad both worked at the local elementary school. And my husband and I, we both grew up working with our hands. I was just your average hockey mom in Alaska... I was serving as the team mom and coaching some basketball on the side. I got involved in the PTA and then was elected to the city council, and then elected mayor of my hometown, where my agenda was to stop wasteful spending, and cut property taxes, and put the people first. Palin also mentioned her family which includes a son who joined the military in September 11, 2007 and will be sent to Iraq this September 11th. She also just had a son in March who was given a positive medical prognosis of down syndrome several weeks before he was born. The 44 year-old governor's husband used to work extensively in the oil business and she also has three daughters who are seventeen, fourteen and seven years old. Palin mentioned her successes in the Alaskan governorship including cutting spending and increasing energy production. She also thanked former Vice Presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro and former democratic candidate Hillary Clinton for their contribution to women's politics. Palin finished speech by saying "If you want change in Washington, if you hope for a better America, then we’re asking for your vote on the 4th of November. My fellow Americans, come join our cause. Join our cause and help our country to elect a great man the next president of the United States. And I thank you, and I — God bless you, I say, and God bless America. Thank you." Palin and McCain went to the western PA city of Washington on Saturday. Obama Accepts Democratic Party Presidential Nomination in Denver. -Illinois senator, Barack Obama officially accepted his party's nomination on Thursday in Denver, CO.. Obama spoke to at least 70,000 people in Invesco Field which is used normally for the NFL's Denver Broncos. Obama said that Americans can achieve their dreams by "hard work". Obama said that Americans are "watching your home values plummet" and have "cars you can't afford to drive" He said that government should have responded better to these events. He said that America is better than what has happened in the last eight years. Americans are better than leaving homeless alone and letting cities fall apart. Obama continued by saying "we are here because we love this country too much to let next four years look too much like the last eight." Obama did praise McCain's military service and maverick personality but said that he did not believe that John McCain voted against the policies of President George W. Bush enough. He said that America is not "a nation of whiners" but a nation of people that work hard. Obama said that Senator McCain does not know what is going in the country and stated many of his policies that pointed to that conclusion. He said that McCain believes in the maxim "give more and more to those with the most and hope that prosperity trickles down to the most". He stated this is a policy that tells each American to be "on your own" in economic decisions and success. Obama said that the Democrats measure success differently including by "whether the waitress who lives on tips can take a day off to look after a sick kid without losing her job" He later stated that "the market should reward...drive and innovation and generate growth; but that businesses should live up to their responsibilities to create American jobs, to look out for American workers and play by the rules of the road". The Illinois senator also praised the GI bill, food stamps and public education because of his own personal experiences. He also praised his grandmother who could not be in Denver because of a physical difficulty. He stated many times that he wanted to keep the American promise alive. He said that the American promise "says ... each of us has the freedom to make of our own lives what we will, but that we also have obligations to treat each other with dignity and respect" He finished his speech by saying that America can not turn back on bad cities and a bad economy. He quoted Hebrews 10:23 as he closed his historical acceptance speech. Obama and Biden were in Ohio on Saturday. Hurricane Gustav Hits Cuba as a Category 4 Storm. -Hurricane Gustav slammed the Cayman Islands and Jamaica on Thursday and Friday as a category 3 hurricane but it increased velocity and hit western Cuba on Saturday as a category 4 storm. Forecasters say that Gustav is near to reaching the strongest category of 5 within the next twenty-four hours. In Cuba, the devastating storm is recorded as "toppled telephone poles, mango and almond trees and peeled back the tin roofs of homes." (yahoo.com) There are no reports of deaths in Cuba yet. Gustav is expected to hit the coastal land of the US on Monday late afternoon. It could damage any area from the western Florida panhandle to eastern Texas. New Orleans has made many plans for evacuation and has already bussed college students, elderly and many other citizens to Jackson, MS among other cities. One million Americans have already left southern Gulf Coast cities for more inland areas. Fugate May Have to Leave Seminary. -Benjamin Fugate went to his first week of classes at Central Seminary this week. He attended two classes of Research and Writing on Wednesday and Friday. He also is taking Hermeneutics on Thursdays for two hours. Fugate completed some schoolwork on Thursday night but will not be able to because of the completely confusing security system that has been set up at the school. The school requires a four digit pass code for each student getting on the internet and intranet on its student computers which Fugate has not received correctly. Fugate also has not been informed of the changed five digit pass code for getting into the library after hours. Fugate tried to get in touch with Joshua Boyd by email and phone but has not received any answer at press time. Fugate cannot do most of his homework without this access. Fugate is able to access his email but not other parts of the Central Seminary intranet. Editorial. -Well I could speak on the bad decision of Sarah Palin. I could mention that she had just as little experience in government as senator Obama and that she is not qualified for the vice presidency. I could mention that she does have great morals and actions. She is a doer in government but she is not ready to be the VEEP. Obama is not ready for the presidency and Palin is not ready to be the second highest elected official in the United States. But instead let me expound on the platforms Senator Obama and Senator McCain in this way. Hurrican Gustav is ready to hit the southern Gulf states again. It may slam New Orleans just as Katrina did three years ago. It might tear up cities like Mobile, AL; Pascagoula, MS; Tallahassee, FL and/or Houston, TX. Obama and Biden will blame President Bush and candidate McCain" for any deaths and injuries from the category five storm because of global worming and an unready FEMA . Obama will say that Bush should send immediate aid and open up the Superdome for all the people to stay in again. Obama will say that the president is bad for not responding and he will tell the president that he needs to build up all the houses lost in the storm again and to give checks to everyone involved in the disaster to come. Biden will probably give his plan for saving the South and he will probably go down there and look really humble by packing sandbags in hundred-mile winds. But this is the problem of the Obama platform. The conscious Obama supporters, including most of those that spoke in Denver this past week, will say that government's involvement in each American's life needs to be CHANGED. These socialists say that government should save everyone from trouble a nd should nationalize all commodities so that everyone can have them at an affordable price. If they cannot do that, then they will tax those who raise their prices and convulute that money back to the people. They think that government is around to stop all floods, fires, poverty, post-birth fatalities, diseases and injustices. Obama and his liberal friends like Senator Clinton think that everyone should have healthcare, free abortions, good jobs and a good home at the expense of those who ACTUALLY WORKED hard and made profit to get their necessities and delicacies. They think that government is the answer to people's problems. But on the other hand, Senator McCain and Governor Palin believe that government needs to be FIXED and CHANGED by people! McCain believes that government is corrupted by overspending and overbudgeting. McCain believes that people is the answer to government. Palin believes that both parties have failed and that only those who refuse to give in to the status quo will actually get some things done in a four to eight year span. Conscious McCain supporters realize that government is BROKEN not just because of the current President but because of the many senators, congressional representatives, lobbysists and beauracrats that work so hard to get money spent in all the wrong places. These men and women work hard to get more and more people controlled by the government while hiding where the money is going. They take the rich's hard-earned living and give it to social workers, poor, and unemployed. These liberals subsidize failed energy ideas, lousy healthcare and never ending welfare. These leaders want to rule us like aristocrats that never have to answer for their actions. Government is not the answer to our problems, people who follow the teachings of Scripture are the answer. God is our answer by sending us the bible to help us know that Jesus Christ is our Savior from sin and spiritual poverty. Following scriptural principles and commands will get us a lot farther into success than giving our wealth to government to "redistibrute" it evenly. If we work hard, fear God and give to the poor of our wealth without government taking it first then we will be a much better nation (Ecclesiastes 12:13, 14; Ephesians 4:25). People who challenge the government's far reaching involvement can save us from an overbearing state. We need to be and elect great leaders regardless of party who will shrink the government by cutting employees and spending DRASTICALLY. We need a government that will fix all roads not send food stamps to everyone who asks for them. We need a government that will allow us to drill for more oil not send checks to people who do not run from hurricanes, We need people that will serve God, family and then the state in that order. We do not need a bigger government. We need a smaller state. This is the opinion of editor, Benjamin Fugate
