Russia Invades the Nation of Georgia. -The nations of Georgia and Russia have jumped on opposites of a recent war. Georgia strengthened its presence in the "breakaway province" of South Ossetia earlier this year. Then this week, Russia invaded Georgia with several tanks. Georgia and Russia are preparing for battle in Tskhinvali, the capitol of South Ossetia.
Georgia is allied with the West and the United States verbally defends its actions. But Russia has cited many reasons for getting involved in this set of battles. Sergei Lavrov, Russia's foreign minister, accused the Georgians of carrying out "ethnic cleansing" on the people of South Ossetia, most of whom have Russian passports. "We won't allow the death of our compatriots to go unpunished," Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said, adding that he would "protect the lives and dignity of Russian citizens wherever they are located". Russia is acting upon their promise to protect their fellow Russians in South Ossetia.
But Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili accused Russia of aggression, saying that Russian jets bombed several Georgian villages, wounding seven civilians. Russia has also claimed that it has attacked from far distances by Georgian troops.
Senator Obama Speaks on Energy in Northeast Ohio. -Senator and Democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama spoke on energy at Austintown Fitch High School in the Youngstown, Ohio area on Wednesday. He said he plans to give American families a $1,000 tax rebate for home heating bills if he is elected president. He said that he believes his energy plan is better than his opponent John McCain's energy plan for domestic oil drilling. “You won’t see a drop of oil from John McCain’s plan for the next seven years." Obama stated. He also wants to spend $150 million over 10 years to develop renewable energy, biofuels, and a commercial plug-in hybrid vehicle. Other reports have claimed that the Illinois Senator wants to spend $15 Billion on alternative energy efforts. Obama also traveled to Berea, Ohio and the state of Indiana this week. Many experts believe that Obama has a good chance to win the electoral votes of Indiana even though the majority of voters there have not voted for a democratic general election candidate since Lyndon Johnson won the 1964 election.
McCain Tells Iowa About His Trade Plans. -Republican Presidential candidate John McCain spoke at Iowa State Fair on Friday. The Arizona senator told Iowans of his plans to expand trade on the world market even to Iowa. He also told the audience that he wants more offshore oil drilling and nuclear power in the effort to achieve American energy independence. "I'm all in favor of inflating our tires, don't get me wrong. But that's a public service announcement. It's not an energy policy," McCain said to a cheering crowd.

Mother Chases Her Wandering Three Year Old. -Dianne Pittman must have been surprised when her three year old son walked into a Metro Transit bus in St. Paul, MN on Thursday. Dianne and her 19 year old daughter were standing near a bus stop by the door of a manicurist at about 5PM on Thursday when they lost track of the three year old, D.J.. They could not see him but they saw that a public bus had just pulled away. Dianne hailed a nearby Taxi and followed the bus to a major intersection nearby where the bus had planned to stop so the police could take care of the young boy. When the bus stopped, Pittman ran into it, arriving at about the same time as the police did. Everything turned out alright for the family and when DJ was asked what he was doing on the bus, he replied "Resting".
Editorial. -There are many things to talk about but let me touch on two subjects by giving one illustration. Imagine that you lived in a small town, you had no car and a crummy job. Oh wait, because of liberals we might all be that way soon. Anyways, in this small city there is one gracery store with all the finest foods and the best variety of necessities like bread and milk. At first, the grocery store owner who does not like anyone in the town keeps the prices low because he thinks he has great competition but soon he realizes that he has little opposition to his financial efforts. So he raises his prices substantially. Then the demand for his products goes down as all the "townies" grow their own gardens, fields, and livestock. So he lowers his price little by little and the people slowly come back and eventually increase their buying volume. This ordeal happens on a smaller scale many times but every time the result is similar except that the price is higher at the end of the end of the situation than before. Soon the store owner starts to secretly vandalize and ransack the houses of the families in town and soon they have to come to him even more for necessities.
This is almost exactly what is and will happen in the Unites States. We are a nation of energy DEPENDENCE. Seventy percent of our oil is purchased from horrible, hateful nations in the Middle East who never will have our best interest control their actions. Yet we have oppurtunity to drill for billions of barrels of oil in this nation's shores, land, and backyards. But because a few liberals including Lindsey Graham of South Carolina who live for the here and now, do not want oil companies to succeed, we have no chance of breaking our addiction to foreign oil.
But imagine if Russia was like us. What if Russia bought all its oil from nations including the ethical nation of Georgia? What if they knew attacking the South Central Asian nation would mean higher gas prices? What if the evil Russia was in fear at all times that gas prices might just go up 50 to 75& in any six month interval because all their oil was bought from nations that hate the largest nation in the world? What if Russia, a nation of vast oil resources, "held its breath" between every move of their oil-producing anti-Russian nations? Do you see what conservatives and John McCain mean now by "energy independence" now? Why can't you liberals and liberal voters just open up your eyes and see that this position is not just conservative it is common sense and American? We need to drill for our own oil and tell the nations that sell oil to us and hate us to find new buyers. Even if it would take ten years to get one drop we need to start drilling now! So open up your backyard, your oceans, your wildlife refuges, your oil shale deposits and drill till there is no oil left! But we all know that there is too much oil for us to use it all in any upcoming century. Until that time we just might run out let us drill like we never have before. This is the opinion of Lost Lake Tribune Editor, Benjamin Fugate.
