JV Warriors Play Well for One Half.- The Fourth Baptist Junior Varsity Boys basketball team hosted the St. John's Prep school JV team on Tuesday. St. John's took a 16-4 lead early but the Warriors cut their deficit in half (see 2/23/09 post) and kept St. John's within reach for the rest of the first half. The halftime score was 29-20. Fourth scored the first basket of the second half to pull within seven. Then St. John's took over going on a 11-2 run to take 40-24 lead. St. John's continued to dominate the second period by hitting a total of five three pointers and taking a 60-30 lead before winning by a score of 60-32. Full Court Press Gives Warriors a Chance in Season Finale.- The Fourth Baptist Varsity Warriors also played St. John's Prep on Tuesday. The Warriors took an early 7-2 lead before allowing St. John's to score the next 16 points with just one dead ball occurring in the game changing run. The two teams traded scores for the rest of the half and the halftime score was St. John's 27, Fourth Baptist 17. In the second half, St. John's attempted to pull away by taking as much as a 17 point lead. With 6:40 to go, St. John's led by 13. Then Fourth Baptist started to make the game interesting. With 4:26 to go, coach Andy Toner called a timeout and instructed his team to run a full court press to try and erase their 11 point deficit. Fourth did as told and hit three three-pointers in a flurry of scoring and fouls. However, St. John's hit their last eight free throws and Fourth missed seven free throws in the second half which resulted in the Warriors losing 59-52. The Warriors did pull to within five points with sixteen seconds to go after a three by Jordan Bong. But they were unable to foul St. John's until 4.6 seconds to go.
