Hurricane Ike Rages Through Texas and the Upper Midwest.-Hurricane Ike hit Texas on Saturday and Sunday, flooding the Galveston and Houston areas. Houston received several feet of rain and more than 2 million lost power for at least 24 hours. The storm was as large as Texas itself at one time. Ike hit Galveston on Saturday and reached Houston as a category 1 before dying down and bringing floods to areas like Arkansas, Western Tennessee, Illinois and Indiana. When the storm hit Indiana, seven people died in the Evansville area. Back in Texas, 1 million people fled coastal communities near where the storm made landfall, authorities in four counties alone said roughly 140,000 ignored mandatory evacuation orders. Other counties were unable to provide numbers but officials were concerned many had stayed behind. These people then called for help and Governor Rick Perry sent 7,500 National Guard soldiers to Galveston and Houston. Ike hit a densely populated area unlike Hurricane Hanna which missed Miami and hit the Upper South instead. Ike also broke levees in Houma, Louisiana. The storm was the worst hurricane in Texas history. Information borrowed from this site

McCain and Palin Speak in Minnesota.- Candidates John McCain and Sarah Palin spoke in Twin City suburb of Blaine, MN on Friday. Thirteen Thousand were on hand for the speech. Outside the Anoka County airport, about 20 Obama supporters peacefully protested the rally. Inside the Key Air Hangar, Palin said to Minnesotans “with your help we're gonna win and we're going to Washigton to shake things up”. She also said that “Americans are tired of politics as usual and those who just run with the Washington herd and that is why we need to take the Maverick of the Senate and put him in the White House.” Palin said that “government reform, energy independence and helping children with special needs” are going to be her top priorities as Vice President. Palin sharply attacked Senator Barack Obama for not having a record of reform. Palin stated her desire for energy independence and stated that Obama has not ever sided with the people on energy. She spoke on her success to get a $40 Billion Natural Gas pipeline in Alaska. She said “we need American energy sources brought to you American ingenuity and produced by American workers.” She finished by telling the crowd that she wants special needs children to have a president on their side.
McCain then spoke about Obama's voting record in the Illinois senate in the late Nineties though 2004. He also spoke on Joe Biden's statement that higher taxes is patriotic. McCain said that “raising taxes on a tough economy isn't patriotic, it isn't a badge of honor, it's just plain dumb”. McCain promised that he will bring growth in the economy through tax cuts. He also promised to”end the pork barrel spending in Washington”. He promised to veto every pork barrel bill “that comes across [his] desk”. He said that Obama has asked for almost $1 Billion in pork barrel spending. He also said that he wants “the forces that have brought down our economy, out of business”. He went on say “we will never forget ... we work for you”. He made sure that the Minnesotans know what he is all about by saying “you have my word, I will always put my country first”. McCain also spoke in Green Bay, WI and Cedar Rapids, IA on Friday. All quotes and facts are fully verified by Editor Benjamin Fugate.
Sports
Colts win with last second FG! - The Colts pulled out a close one on Sunday with an Adam Vinatieri 47 yard field goal to separate the Colts (1-1) from the Minnesota Vikings (0-2). The Vikings had good field position several times in the first three quarters and used that to make five field goals. But a drop by tight end Vishante Shiancoe in the end zone and a 48 yard field goal miss by Ryan Longwell did not help the Vikings. The Colts were down 15-0 before a 77 yard pass play to A. Gonzalez brought them within 1 yard of the end zone. Gonzalez, a second year WR out of Ohio State was just about to be tackled at the 18 yard line when he lateraled the ball to fellow WR Reggie Wayne who took the ball almost to the end zone. Addai later scored a TD to make the game 15-7. The Colts got the ball back 7:09 to go in the game. They took less than two minutes to score a Reggie Wayne TD and tie up the game with a Dominic Rhodes two point conversion. The Vikings then punted to the Colts. The Colts could not move the ball and punted to the Vikings. Tim Jennings downed the ball at the 2 yard line and the defense forced the Vikings to punt the ball again. The Colts took the ball at the 50 and went stagnant for two plays until Peyton Manning found Wayne for 21 yards to set up the winning FG.
Packers Win by Robbing Jon Kitna Twice. -The Green Bay Packers defense risked getting arrested by Detroit police as they proceeded to intercept two Jon Kitna passes and took each back for a touchdown after Detroit had taken a slim 25-24 lead. The Packers scored 24 points in the last seven minutes to give Aaron Rodgers his second victory and his team the lead in the NFC North. Rodgers did not just rely on the defense to win, he also had some great plays of his own as he passed for three touchdowns to get the Packers to 2-0.

St. Anthony Falls Bridge Opened on Thursday. -The new I-35W bridge opened at 5AM on Thursday in downtown Minneapolis. The 10 lane bridge cost $234 million. The new bridge is marked by lights for the start and end of the Mississippi River water. The brand new steel girded cement bridge looks out of place amongst a city that is struggling to update other roads and buildings. The bridge was a rapid response to the bridge that tumbled into the Mississippi on August 1, 2007, killing 13 people. In nearby Gold Medal park, a new memorial will be built for the victims of the bridge collapse.

EDITORIAL
Editorial. -What is wrong with a bank “taking the fall”? We see a president asking the “do-nothing” congress to “bailout” all the bad loans that Banks gave to poor Americans because of the socialism brought to the banking field by Carter and Clinton. Clinton told banks like Fannie Mac to GIVE loans to minorities and the poor so that everyone could get a fair chance. That is a fact and that fact has been ruining our capitalism ever since. Banks should not get one penny from the government unless they first go and collect all money that they can from their debtors1 AIG, Lehman Brothers, Merill Lynch, Fannie Mac and all the other poorly-run banks (pun intended) need to fall apart and DISAPPEAR so that this problem dissolves. The bailout that Bush plans will sweep these problems under the Federal Reserve's rug. The Barney Franks of the world need to put in jail. Jim Johnson needs to be in the cell across from Frank and Obama needs to be put on trial also. But what is the real problem here? The PAPER and ELECTRONIC STANDARD. If this nation would cut up all the debit and credit cards, end electronic banking, and force every purchase to have at least %10 down, then this problem will go away fast. Furthermore if this nation ends the paper standard over the next thirty years and goes to the METAL STANDARD of currency we will never see this problem again. Let us change our ideology that everyone needs to own a home and restore a capitalist America. This is the opinion of editor, Benjamin Fugate. 9/20/2008 See more Editorial page 6

Fugate Attends Rally and Crosses Bridge. - Benjamin Fugate worked hard on brainstorming during breaks at his job this week. But he never anticipated the excitement from that brainstorming would pale in comparison to his excitement on Friday. While listening to the radio at 8AM, he heard that Presidential candidate John McCain and Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin were going to be in Blaine, MN that very day at Noon. He went to his Research and Writing class and chapel before getting on the John McCain website and printed off an unnecessary ticket to the event. He drove fifteen miles to the Anoka County- Blaine airport and parked at the CVS about two miles walk away. He walked to the Key Air hangar, buying a Gary Varvel pin on the way. Fugate went through the metal detector and then stood about 1000 feet from the podium.
There was a peaceful Obama sign holder about 10 feet away from Fugate. This middle aged man was confronted by several older men that support McCain. One of the McCain supporters started to yell at the Obama sign holder and soon was escorted by police away from the event. The Obama sign holder later left just for his own safety. Fugate was only able to hear about a third of the speeches and could barely see the candidates. But the event was very exciting and the crowd was electrified by the two candidates.
Fugate was not done having fun. On the way back to Plymouth, he missed the I-694 West interchange because of traffic and then proceeded to cross the new I-35W bridge. He is the first Fugate to be born a football field away from the old bridge and the first Fugate to cross the new bridge.

Letters to the Editor, -
“May I ask where you found the information that Todd Beamer is from Minnesota? According to[Christianity Today] he was born in Michigan and spent most of his growing up years in Illinois.
As for the editorial... [sic] the foolishness of your immigration "plan" is astounding. Not only is it completely ludicrous, but it is inhumane to treat immigrants in such a manner. Your plan calls for the decimation of basic human rights. All are created in the image of God and no person, no matter what country he or she is from, deserves to be treated as less than an animal. Forcing "every immunization" is unethical as people should have the right to choose if they want a chicken pox or gardasil vaccine. (proven unnecessary) Furthermore, this country was built on immigration. Closing the borders would create a horrid relationship with not only Mexico, but Canada as well. Herding people into a few select cities would be utter chaos. To be very practical, the cost of your plan is staggering. I am saddened that you, through your plan, have shown yourself to be one who believes you are better than a fellow citizen of this world.” Melissa Peacock Ankeny, Iowa
