Verses to Consider as the Pope Resigns

Colossians 1:15-18
"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence." NKJV

Matthew 23:9
"Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven." NKJV

Matthew 16:18-19
"I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven." NASB

II Timothy 3:12
"Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution." NKJV

Ben: Thanks for these reminders that Christ is our Mediator between God and man. While the news story about the new Pope of the Catholic Church was interesting from only "what is happening in the news perspective", I know many believers give honor to the Pope. I am not sure why this happens, especially when the one holding this "office" claims to be our representative to God.

Many believers fail to think about the Word of God and the truths about our loving Heavenly Father and all the gifts He showers to us. They fail to remember that Christ makes intercession to the Father on our behalf. I love sharing this verse with many believers and non-believers alike: Romans 8:34 "Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us."

Of course, this verse is near two other verses we, as believers, know very well. The first verse is about the Holy Spirit prays for us, and the second verse, which some misapply, is "All things work together for good . . . ". Our brothers and sisters in Christ would do well to apply the end of Romans 8 to their lives on a daily basis. I am sure this is why you understand such a great truth of Christ being our only Mediator. Our God is so loving!

I want to encourage you to not be discouraged when you believe what you write is not influencing others. I can assure you it does influence others even if we do not realize it or receive thanks from others. Keep on being faithful. Please greet your family on my behalf. - Vance Donahue
